Terms of Service

You must be at least 18 years old and able to enter into a binding agreement to use the Service. If you use the Service on behalf of an organisation, you confirm that you are authorised to accept these Terms for it. You are responsible for the accuracy of your account information, for keeping your credentials confidential, and for all activity under your account. Tell us promptly at hello@sciense.org if you suspect unauthorised use.

Sciense provides tools to create and join research projects, share and review documents, coordinate authorship, take part in studies and use AI assistants. Some features are experimental. We may add, change, limit or remove features, including usage limits, at any time.

Use the Service responsibly and lawfully. You agree not to:

• post or transmit content that is unlawful, harmful, threatening, harassing, defamatory, obscene or otherwise objectionable, or that infringes anyone's rights;
• impersonate any person or organisation, or misrepresent your identity, affiliation or credentials;
• upload personal or health information about others without a lawful basis and any required consent or approval;
• access the Service by automated means (such as bots, scrapers or crawlers) without our written permission, or circumvent rate limits, sign-up requirements or other access controls;
• probe, scan or test the vulnerability of the Service, interfere with its operation, or introduce malware;
• copy, reverse engineer or resell the Service, or use it or its AI outputs to build a competing service;
• use the Service to mislead others about the source or status of scientific work, or for scientific misconduct.

You keep ownership of the content you submit, post or transmit through the Service ("your content"), and you are responsible for it. You confirm that you have the rights needed to share it.

You grant Sciense a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, sublicensable and transferable licence to host, store, reproduce, adapt, display and distribute your content as needed to operate, secure, improve and promote the Service, and to use it for scientific research as described in our Privacy Policy. This licence continues for content shared with collaborators or made part of a project or the scientific record after you leave, and for research data already derived from your content.

Content you share in a project is visible to its members according to the project's settings. Content you make public is visible to everyone.

Sciense studies how science is done. Information provided through the Service, including AI conversations, contributions and usage, may be used for scientific research with the safeguards set out in our Privacy Policy. Taking part in a specific research study is voluntary and governed by that study's own information and consent documents.

• AI features generate content automatically. Outputs can be incomplete, inaccurate or out of date, and they do not represent the views of Sciense, of any author or of any person an AI feature portrays.
• Personas, such as the Schopenhauer reading, are playful devices for critical thinking. They are not the views of the person portrayed, and their verdicts are not peer review or evidence.
• AI outputs are not medical, legal, financial or other professional advice. Do not rely on them for clinical or other consequential decisions; check them against the sources.
• Your questions, the passages you select and the answers generated are stored and may be used to operate and improve the Service and for research, as described in our Privacy Policy. Do not enter sensitive personal information into AI features.
• AI features run on third-party model providers, and are subject to usage limits that may require an account.

The Service may display or link to material owned by others, such as published articles or correspondence reproduced for commentary. That material remains the property of its owners, who are credited where it appears. Read and cite the original source. We are not responsible for third-party websites or services you reach through the Service.

We respect intellectual property rights and respond to notices of alleged infringement under the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act and similar laws. To report content you believe infringes your copyright, send our designated agent at hello@sciense.org a notice that includes: your signature; identification of the work; the location of the material on the Service; your contact details; a statement that you have a good-faith belief the use is not authorised by the owner, its agent or the law; and a statement, under penalty of perjury, that the notice is accurate and that you are the owner or authorised to act for the owner. If your content is removed, you may send a counter-notice to the same address. We disable the accounts of repeat infringers where appropriate.

Our Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, share and protect personal information, including its use for research, and your rights.

We may update these Terms. We will post the new version with its date and, for material changes, notify you by email or in the Service at least 30 days before they take effect, unless a change is required sooner by law or for security. If you continue to use the Service after a change takes effect, the updated Terms apply; if you do not agree, stop using the Service and you may close your account.

You may stop using the Service and ask us to close your account at any time by contacting hello@sciense.org. We may restrict, suspend or close your account, or remove content, if you breach these Terms, if required by law, or to protect users, third parties or the Service. Unless the law or safety prevents it, we will tell you the reasons and how to contest the decision, which you can do by replying to us. Sections 4 (as to the licence), 5, 6 and 12 to 16 survive termination.

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that content, including AI outputs and content provided by other users, is accurate or reliable. Nothing on the Service is medical advice.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Sciense, its affiliates and their officers, directors, employees and agents will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for loss of data, profits or goodwill, arising from your use of the Service. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us for the Service in the twelve months before the claim and USD 100. These limits do not apply to liability that cannot be limited by law, such as for fraud, gross negligence, wilful misconduct, or death or personal injury caused by negligence, and they do not affect your statutory rights as a consumer.

To the extent permitted by law, you agree to indemnify and hold harmless Sciense, its affiliates and their officers, directors, employees and agents from claims, losses and expenses, including reasonable legal fees, arising from your content, your use of the Service in breach of these Terms, or your infringement of the rights of others.

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York and applicable US federal law, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Disputes will be resolved exclusively in the state or federal courts located in New York County, New York, and you and we consent to their jurisdiction. If you are a consumer in the European Union, the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you keep the protection of the mandatory laws of your country of residence and may also bring proceedings in its courts. Before starting proceedings, please contact hello@sciense.org so we can try to resolve the issue informally.

These Terms and our Privacy Policy are the entire agreement between you and Sciense Corp about the Service. If a provision is unenforceable, it will be limited to the minimum extent necessary and the rest remains in effect. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver. You may not assign these Terms without our consent; we may assign them in connection with a merger, acquisition or reorganisation. Where a study's consent documents or a separate written agreement with us conflict with these Terms, they prevail for that study or agreement.
